Texas Rent Relief Program

State-administered emergency rental assistance for eligible Texas households facing financial hardship. Covers past-due rent and utility costs.

Income at or below 80% of Area Median Income. Must have experienced financial hardship.

Abilene Housing Authority

Provides affordable housing options and Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher assistance to low-income residents in Abilene and Taylor County.

Utility Assistance

LIHEAP — Low Income Home Energy Assistance

Federal program that helps low-income households pay heating and cooling bills. Administered locally through the West Texas Opportunities agency.

Eligibility

Income at or below 150% of Federal Poverty Level.

Emergency Housing

Abilene Hope Haven

Emergency shelter and transitional housing services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the Big Country area.

Eligibility

Open to individuals and families in crisis. Call for current availability.

Rural Housing

USDA Rural Development — Section 515

Subsidized rental housing in rural communities including Hamlin and surrounding Jones County. Affordable rates for eligible low-income residents.

Eligibility

Income limits apply. Rural area residency required.

Legal Aid

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas

Free civil legal services for low-income Texans, including tenant rights, eviction defense, and housing discrimination cases.

Eligibility

Income-based. Covers Taylor, Jones, and surrounding counties.

How to Apply for Housing

Check Your Eligibility

Review income limits and eligibility requirements for the program you're interested in. Most programs use Area Median Income (AMI) as the benchmark.

Gather Your Documents

Collect recent pay stubs, government-issued ID, Social Security cards for all household members, and proof of current address.

Submit Your Application

Apply directly through the agency's website or by calling their office. Some programs have waitlists — apply early.

Follow Up
